These last 40 days or so I have been waiting for the joy of Easter Sunday with my Lenten art journal. Lent for all Christians is a time to reflect on what Jesus Christ has done for us. His death on the cross gives each of us new life. My prayer time every afternoon is a part of my daily routine but I’ve added art journaling as my morning prayer time. Through journaling and art, I find way to unload my anxious heart and thank God for all the blessings He has bestowed on my life. I’m not sure how I could stay sane without my art journaling process every morning.
My Lenten Art Journal
This is my third Lenten art journal. I chose to go with a smaller size journal because I don’t want to take up too much time in the morning trying to fill up space.
Before I create, I read a Catholic Lenten reflection booklet for each day. It’s always a short reflection but it gets me thinking about how I want to stay close to God. My next step is to journal out my thoughts. It’s my way of praying. I share my anxieties, my hopes, my dreams and my petitions. I give it all to God. My preference would be to have no one see what I wrote so I start the next step which is covering it all up with art. I have a huge selection of art supplies so I just work with whatever peeks my interest that day. (Acrylics, watercolors, stencils, pencils, paint pens, etc.) I know I’m getting old because now I want more art supplies and less handbags! Lol!
I have been taking a mixed media art journaling course called Wanderlust. It lasts the whole year and there is a new lesson every week. These lessons have taught me about supplies that I have never used before and fun techniques to try with them. Several of those techniques have showed up this journal. The image of hearts kept creeping into these pages which reminds me that I should be focusing on the heart of God. Last year it was leaves and I was focused on growth. Love how God shows me the way.
The joy that I receive from art journaling is life-giving. I’m getting excited about sharing my love for it with others and I think that might happen sooner than later with my healing program. I will keep you posted. I hope you all have wonderful holy week and Easter. He is risen, He is risen indeed!

I’ve always wondered how you created such lovely pages in your journal. I really like that you put it all down then cover it with the art. That way, it stays between you and God. Thanks so much for sharing this, Kathrine.

He is Risen, indeed! 🙂 I love your idea of art journaling and all the colors you used make the art so beautiful. I’m glad you have this outlet to put your thoughts out there and give it all to God. For me, I always feel a sense of peace when I release my fears and anxieties to God. Things have a way of becoming clearer and leading me to the right path. Happy Divine Mercy Sunday, Kathrine! 🙂
