Today I’m keeping it casual cool on a budget with my thrifted jeans. Jodie and Mireille have finally rubbed off on me and I’ve started doing some thrifting. The reason I started was mostly because I can’t fit into a lot of my jeans that I currently have in my wardrobe. I’ve gained weight in my midsection because of menopause and it’s not going away anytime soon. The bright side is that I found these amazing Paige slim bootcut jeans in a petite size for $7! That were practically new and there was no need to get them hemmed.

Keeping it Cool on a Budget

I stayed on a budget with this look by shopping my closet and finding a couple good pieces on Amazon. This bomber jacket was a from a couple of years ago and I barely wear it. I have no idea why I don’t because it’s so lightweight and perfect to bring into Spring. It’s reversible as you can see from the above images.
Since I’ve been suffering with hot flashes, I’ve been looking for short sleeve lightweight tops. This puff sleeve one fits the bill and works great as a layering piece. The bag is the really cool find. It creeped into my Insta feed and I couldn’t resist. I love the Gucci vibes with the stripes and bee. But it’s the camera strap that really caught my attention. The colors are so fun and eye-catching. Not a bad purchase for $27!

As a fellow musician, lover of fashion, and menopausal woman, may I suggest reading “Estrogen Matters” by Avrum Bluming, M.D. and Carol Tavris, PhD. I believe it to be the best book on HRT available today. It is incredibly well documented and dispels so many of the fears we the public and the medical community have regarding HRT. If nothing else, it will help us understand why the WHI study that came out in 2002 caused women worldwide to throw out their hormone prescriptions and why doctors became so reluctant to prescribe HRT. That one very flawed study has caused a lot of needless suffering. I am one of the women who was quite negatively impacted.
My last period was in May 2008. I am one of the minority of women who still has severe symptoms 16 years later!
(I am 69 and still quite symptomatic.) I was on hormone patches between 2012 and 2014. Then my insurance company pulled the plug and my doctor retired. The rebound hot flashes and night sweats were horrific. I was told that I should be back to baseline within 3 years after discontinuing HRT. Nope, at the 5 year mark I averaged 5 to 6 hot flashes 6 nights per week. That was in 2019. Around that time I read “Estrogen Matters” and a book by Mache Seibel, M.D. called “The Estrogen Window”. I decided that I had been suffering needlessly and that I never should have allowed myself to be taken off of HRT. Unfortunately, my new gynecologist in 2019 believed in the old mantra, “Use the lowest dose possible for the shortest time possible”. She started me on an ultra low dose birth control pill in January 2020. (I 1st saw her in September 2019 to get an HRT prescription. She told me to go home and think about the pros and cons. I had already done that and wanted a prescription yesterday, ha, ha. I scheduled a new appointment the same day because I wanted relief! My appointment got cancelled and rescheduled 3 times before I finally got back in the office 4 months later!) I failed the ultra low dose birth control trial. No relief of symptoms , but had spotting. She tried two more ultra low dose birth control prescriptions with the same result. She finally sighed and told me we’d have to try traditional HRT. Of course, following her mantra, she started me on the lowest dose of HRT. To make a long story short, I did not get an appropriate dose of hormone to alleviate most of my symptoms until December 2023. That was only because I changed to a new gynecologist! I now take 1.5 mg of estradiol every night and 200 mg of progesterone. In my opinion, it simply should not be so difficult to get appropriate care. My quality of life was horrible for years because of the fear spread by the WHI.
There is a fabulous series on YouTube by Menopause Taylor if you would like an in-depth education on menopause and the pros and cons of HRT. Don’t let Barbie Taylor’s quirky appearance put you off. She has a Victorian fashion aesthetic and loves to coat her skin in vaseline, so she looks a little different. However, Dr. Taylor is extremely intelligent and has done in-depth research to give her viewers the most current information. I trust her advice more than any other provider speaking about menopause on YouTube.
Hi Kathy! I appreciate you sharing your journey with me. You are the second person that has told me about this book. As soon as I finish the Wisdom of Menopause, I will get this one. After getting my hormones checked, I have started on progesterone cream with some supplements because I am estrogen dominant. (low on progesterone). I will have to say that my symptoms are less in less which makes me giddy. I do realize that my estrogen will go down eventually because I’m on the early side of perimenopause so I will need to get tested again in 6 months. I feel you on this crazy journey and how hard it is to find a doctor that really helps. I really appreciate all your suggestions and thank you so much for supporting me and my blog!
Welcome to the Thrifty club! Isn’t it fun! Those jeans look very very good.
Thanks Sharron Murphy! Have a lovely week!

You look great!
Thanks Hena! Have a terrific day!
Wow! You look fabulous in these jeans, thrifted or not! I do hope you find some relief soon. Did your appointment with the naturopath go ok? I have estradiol but rarely use it. I’ve been postmenopausal since 2009 and still have a couple of hot flashes a night. They’re usually right before I drift off to sleep. I think part of it is that I expect them. Love the bomber and that cute little purse!

Mireille is going to be in Scottsdale to see Jodie the week before I’m there and I’m SO bummed I won’t get to meet her! She said they’re going to go thrifting while there. I have not gotten into thrifting, but I can see why you’re trying it out. Jodie, her husband and I are doing a tea time while I’m in Scottsdale– I can’t wait! Menopause is no fun, I’m sure… I’m just experiencing peri-menopause (headaches, trouble sleeping that magnesium helps with!!) and it isn’t fun either. I LOVE that jacket, so, so fun!! And the City Lips are my fave glosses!

Oh these jeans are great they look new! Thrifting can be really fun. I have the same problem I have a pile of jeans and bottoms that don’t fit. I even lost a bit of weight but my mid section grew. But actually it didn’t what is actually happening is loss of collagen and the skin and muscles sagging some, they fall a bit and hit your hips and then spread out, hence the term middle age spread. I think exercise to tone the torso and abdomen could help.

What a steal on both the jeans and bag! I love that you don’t need to get the pants hemmed. A lot of the times I need mine shortened and it is always a joy when it just fits. The strap on the bag is really cool. Totally eye catching and unique!

These are such great jeans on you! I find jeans such a hard thing to get when thrifting – being petite, any kind of pants shopping is often frustrating. but it makes it all the more special when you find a pair that look like they were made for you like you have here! 🙂
